Happy woman

When one is feeling down and gloomy it is quite easy and tempting to grab some quick pick-me-up snacks or beverages that are high in sugar to lift your spirits up. However, if you are aware, relying on these snacks may help you feel better for the time being but they actually affect your body including your mental health in an adverse way in the long run.

Yes, you must be wondering if there is really a link between our moods and the food we consume. Recently, the research on the connection between food and mental health has been on the forefront. The research provides heavy evidence that human mood can be easily influenced by our diet. In recent years, more evidence is coming up that proves that food indeed plays a vital role in the mental health condition of humans and a healthy diet also prevents the onset of mental disorders in the first place.

To be mentally healthy, especially if you are someone who suffers from depression and anxiety, you need a well-balanced diet. A diet that is rich in fiber and promotes alkalinity in the body as the sugary snacks are towards the acidic side and lead to increased inflammation. This not only affects your mental health but your immune system and is a major cause of anxiety as well.

The reason our body craves these sugary snacks and beverages especially when we are stressed or feeling down is that the body starts producing a high amount of cortisol which is a stress hormone. To counteract this and feel better, our body asks for sugar to produce the happy hormone called serotonin. However, dealing with stress by relying on sugar is very harmful and is a cause of anxiety and many other ailments.

Science shows that a diet that is poor in nutrient-dense foods like sugary snacks and relying on beverages etc can increase inflammation in the body which is one of the main risk factors of depression in humans. Processed foods are a major cause behind inflammation and the intake of such a poor diet over a course of time can cause a number of nutritional deficiencies leading to various other serious diseases as well.

Various studies show that people who consume a diet rich in plenty of vegetables and fruits which is also rich in fiber helps reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. Most fruits, vegetables, and nuts are alkaline and balance the pH of the body while processed foods, dairy, canned snacks, etc are acidic and are the cause of inflammation.

So, are you someone who usually feels sluggish and lethargic all day and ends up resorting to coffee and snacks for a quick pick me up? Well, you will now need to start making some dietary changes.

And yes by changing just one daily habit, you can easily boost your mood. This one daily habit includes taking a smoothie first thing in the morning. This is because what you consume first thing in the morning after your body has been fasting all night long is very important and should be taken care of.

I have an alkaline-rich smoothie that I have been taking for a while. Being from France, my own breakfast was mainly composed of cereals, milk, or our usual croissants, baguettes loaded with jam and butter in the morning. While that may look like a yummy treat to start your day, the problem with these kinds of meals was that they were constantly bringing my blood sugar level, known as the glycemic index, high for only two hours, and then it would naturally drop down like a rollercoaster causing me to be hungry all day and also affecting my mood and causing me to feel irritated and sluggish all day.

It took me a long time of researching and going through various studies and experimenting with different ingredients to finally figure out the right and healthy way to control my mood and energy levels throughout the day. This was by making the changes to what I consume first thing in the morning and this was a smoothie. Yes, just taking a smoothie greatly boosted my mood and also improved my energy levels.

I started initially by taking smoothies that had too many fruits in them and I was not getting the desired results. I was trying not to go for green smoothies as I had previously tried a few times and it didn’t taste nice to me. But then I finally found a green juice that not only tasted good but also surprisingly changed my overall mood throughout the day after I consumed it for only a few days. It would be fair to say I saw a massive change in my mood and energy levels within just a week!

In this article, I am going to share with you my “Green Power Smoothie” as I love to call it, and also explain the benefits behind all of the ingredients used.

Here is the list of what you need to start making a healthy smoothie.

Base Ingredients

Unsweetened organic nut milk (almond, cashew, hazelnut) or coconut water.

Any fresh or frozen fruit, I recommend wild berries. They are not too sweet and packed with a lot of antioxidants (powerful anti-aging agents).

Healthy fats

Nuts or seed butter, grounded flaxseed, or coconut oil (These are loaded with protein and good fats that give you energy, fight microbes in the body, aid digestion there are so many benefits in it).

Nut butter with apple slice on a table

You can use any plant protein you like (hemp seed, pea protein). Be careful of the protein powder you are consuming, poor quality ones can be harsh on vital organs like your liver and kidneys. Always choose high-quality organic ingredients to get the most benefits for your body.

Protein is the building block of every cell in our body. Your organs, bones, tissues, muscles, skin, hair, and nails are all made from proteins. Protein is required for the body’s natural function to build and repair tissues, make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals.

You can also go for Ora Organic’s So Lean & So Clean. It is an excellent plant-based organic protein powder that is packed with 20+ types of superfoods which include organic pea, sacha inchi, cranberry, sprouted quinoa, and many more.  I safely recommend it and have been using it myself.

For healthy skin and an active lifestyle, keeping your body in a state of alkalinity is vital for better energy performance and improving immunity.

  • Vitamineral green powder
  • Chlorophyll
  • Spirulina
  • Camu Camu Berry
  • Maca
  • Acai powder
  • Bee pollen

I highly recommend the super green powder from the same company Ora easy being green. It contains over 20 organic veggies, grasses, herbs, algae, and superfoods in just one serving.

A handful of greens (kale, spinach, dandelion, watercress, sprouts, etc.). These ingredients help fight against inflammation and are also rich in antioxidants.

  • Cinnamon
  • Cardamon
  • Vanilla (powder or extract)
  • Nutmeg
  • Ginger (minced root or powder)
  • Sea salt
  • Unsweetened cacao powder
  • Carob

The recipe for my Morning Green Power smoothie

Green morning smoothie

  • A handful of fresh spinach
  • 10 oz almond or coconut milk (any nut milk of your choice)
  • A few frozen organic berries
  • 1 tbsp organic cold-pressed coconut oil
  • A little ginger (you can add a tsp of unsweetened cocoa powder instead if you don’t like ginger, it goes very well with the smoothie.
  • One scoop of vegan protein powder
  • One scoop of green vegan superfood powder

(Blend all ingredients thoroughly in a blender until smooth. Drink it straight away, do not let it sit as the coconut oil will settle down and get hard on the surface).

The best way to go about following this daily habit is to fix yourself a challenge, like for 7 days. That way you will push yourself to do this consistently and get to see the benefits. We all know what to do, but sometimes we need a push. It’s easier to grab our coffee and toast in the morning, but trust me, if you push yourself, this might be hard but worth it. A lot of people, once they go on a clean diet cannot believe just how much making these dietary changes make them feel better on an emotional level.

Having some support, the right system in place and an accountability partner when we are trying to be healthier is the key to success.
